Warp

for four double-basses
composed 1999; duration 8 minutes
commissioned by Mette Hanskov
world premiere Odense (Denmark) 2000

Constant shifts of pitch and rhythm result in acutely differentiated shifting and overlapping of timbre. In this way a low, multi-layered fabric of noise and tone – enhanced by the large dynamic scale – is woven in which single tonal threads are ‘warped’. Metric exactitude is important in establishing a forward drive in this piece, which the absence of any necessity-of-tonality otherwise would prevent.
