Book of Changes

for solo wind player and sinfonietta (1,1,1,1/1,1,1,0/guit,pno,perc/1,1,1,1)
composed 2001/02; duration 22 minutes
commissioned by Århus Sinfonietta, Denmark
world premiere february 10th 2002
Louisiana Museum of Art (Denmark)
Torben Snekkestad – saxophones
Århus Sinfonietta, Søren K. Hansen – conductor

The ensemble has an exact score to follow, but nothing is written in the solo part. The soloist is required to improvise throughout the piece according to the sonorities and intensities etc. of the ensemble. There are no set rules for the soloist to follow, except for the fact that the instruments chosen can be any kind of wind instrument only. However, these can be from any age and any cultural region, and the solist can alternate between several wind instruments. Towards the end is a short section of independant elements shared by smaller ensembles from within the sinfonietta ensemble. They are performed ‘on cue’ from either the soloist, the conductor or the players themselves. The only exception to this is the percussionist who will provide a pulse throughoout the section, according to the particular instructions in the part. The piece was premiered as First Book of Changes at Louisiana Museum of Art (Denmark) on February 10th 2002 with saxophonist Torben Snekkestad as soloist and Århus Sinfonietta conducted by Søren K. Hansen.
