Playing with Dead Things

for flute, bass clarinet and piano
composed 1995; duration 14 minutes
commissioned by Het Trio, Holland
world premiere Gent (Belgium) 1998
Ensemble Assisi

The flute and the bass clarinet are the dominating instruments in the first two-thirds of the piece. The piano is like a resonating body, forming a backdrop for the two wind instruments. They have in turn rather free parts to play, full of details. The score is constructed around gestures and overall phrasing, and the parts are made so that the players have freedom in the detailed shaping of their phrases. The second section, which is much shorter than the first, is very energetic and strident. The piano now comes in focus, and it drags the other instruments around in the registers.
