Dawn Descending

for flute, clarinet, harp, 2 violins, viola and cello
composed 1993; duration 14 minutes
commissioned by The 5th World Harp Congress
world premiere Copenhagen (Denmark) 1994

The harp is usually considered an instrument with connotations of the divine. In this piece, the harp makes its entry ‘from above’, but the expressive range of the instrument soon brings with it some not-so-divine energies. Violent attacks and edgy phrasings changes the initial, lazy atmosphere to one of strong, blinding light, before the piece enters into the darker realms of the earth.
