Concerto

for bass trombone and 4 percussion players
composed 1993; duration 25 minutes
world premiere Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde (Denmark) 1993

The piece is based on the stage work LORA, for two actors – a young girl of app. 12 years and an old man of app. 70 years – bass trombone and 4 percussion players. The sonic tissue utilizes the extreme depths of a bass trombone with third and fourth valve. The percussion combine strong pulse with spatial notation of floating sound-colours. Only little use is made of pulse and high-charged energy, aiming at contrast and expectation rather than applied force and continued projection. Concerto follows largely the scheme of the original version of LORA. Some reductions have been made, though, to make up for the lack of any scenic elements, as well as sung or spoken text.
