Plunge

for flute/piccolo, clarinet, trombone, percusion,
piano, viola, and cello
composed 2005; duration 12minutes
commissioned by MD7 and Pavel Mihelcic
world premiere Ljubljana (Slovenia) july 8 2005

The work makes ample use of rhythm permutations throughout. The combinations are extended into compound divisions of extended duration that carry the action on in a continuous movement. Towards the end these rhythms start to coagulate into frozen gestures in each instrument that repeat with tiny variations. Gradually the rhythms become strings of pulsations that gradually lose relation to the general tempo. The viola then appears in a final cadenza-like solo in the foreground of this gentle mass of sound, before the cello joins the viola and the work comes to rest on extended, punctuated chords.
