Jai Jenkov – timpani

The ability of the timpani to be a kind of ‘talking drum’ is exploited in the piece. As the timpani take on their own personality, the soloist’s role becomes one of unlocking their secret rather than using them as instruments intended for music-making. This circle of action-reaction creates the form of the piece, and towards the end the soloist talks into the drum, thereby confirming an equal and interdependent relationship.
