Traces and Splinters

for flute, violin, viola and cello
composed 1997-98; duration 11 minutes
commissioned by the Carl Nielsen Museum
world premiere Odense (Denmark) 1998
Lars Graugaard – flute; Bjarne Hansen – violin;
Finn Winsløv – cello; Svend Winsløv – cello

In the first and last section the string trio acts as a unit, while the flute embellishes the repercussing rhythms of the string clusters. The climax of the piece is the central section, which also contains the quietest music of the piece. As the music goes down into a hush, so does the phrases get longer, as if submitted to the forces of gravity. The outer sections are strongly gestural in the flute, where some very rapid playing is bouncing of from long, held notes. The music keeps diving down towards a lower border, but it is not until the end that it is reached – resulting in a long sweep upwards, in diminuendo.
