Dream; Then Talk

for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn
composed 1996-98; duration 12 minutes
commissioned by the Selandia Ensemble

The central element is a short, highly energetic statement of all five players. This statement spins off into a number of incidents, usually involving only a few of the players. The first episode is for flute, oboe, and clarinet; the second is for horn and bassoon; the third for flute alone; the fourth for flute and oboe while the fifth is for the french horn. The piece concludes with an episode for the whole quintet that sums up the activities. This give the piece an episodic quality, in spite of the ending episode, and even though the central statement at each recurrence is slightly changed.
