Transformations

for bass clarinet, bassoon, viola and cello
composed 1985; duration 15 minutes
world premiere at GAUDEAMUS Music Week 1986
Delta Ensemble

A gesture of about 15 beats undergoes a very slow change. The technique is related to the procedures of a number of other pieces by Graugaard – such as Jeu de la Nuit, Quattro Fatti al Rallenti, The Circle and The Web, etc., and in the second movement of the Trio for flute, viola and harp – but Transformations is the first example of its use. But in this piece the transformation of the original gesture is particularly slow. For each repeat a few pitches are moved, and the phrase is slightly prolonged, or a part of the phrase is prolonged while another is contracted. The three sections of the piece have no formal relationship.
