Squeeze and Reveal

for bass clarinet and piano
composed 2003; duration 8 minutes
commissioned by and dedicated to Henri Bok
(also available for baritone saxophone and piano)

‘Squeeze and Reveal’ is based on the solo piano work ‘Stretch and Conceal’. It uses a combination of notated and open sections which provide a context for improvisation, which is a particular strong-point of the Mr. Bok. The work seeks to maintain good balance between the two approaches so that neither may dominate. The term ‘squeeze’ applies to the extremely economical use of material in the written-out sections. ‘Reveal’ applies merely to the gradual uncovering of the composition during the course of its performance, apart from a beautiful ostinato by the American jazz bass-player Charlie Mingus.
