This piece can be played in two different versions: as a quartet with either harpsichord or organ, or as a quintet with both instruments. Furthermore, the piece is closely related to the trio Fleeting Tarry for flute, oboe, and bassoon.

The organ acts as a kind of invisible, resonating body inside which all other instruments reside. In this way, the piece doesn’t suffer if there is some distance to the organ – if for instance the organ and the other players are in opposite ends of the church.

In the first part a tenuto cantabile character dominates, only later to be stirred by rhythms of a cell-like nature which continues to grow in intensity towards the end, reaching a climax in a brief fugato. The cadenza, which acts as the central axis of the piece, is played by the organ, or by the harpsichord if the piece is performed without the organ.
