composed 1998; duration 22 minutes

Odense Sinfonietta, Flemming Vistisen – conductor

This piece combines the ‘fixated’ with the ‘loose’, and the aim is to show that in essence there is little between the two when they become one, inseparable whole. The soloist has nothing written in the part. In fact there can be several soloists, the only thing that is given is that the soloist must indeed be a percussion player. But the instruments chosen can be pitched and non-pitched in any combination. The part of the soloist can be taken by several percussion players. The ensemble has an exact score to follow, disregarding a short section towards the very end of the piece, where a set of elements shared by smaller ensembles inside the whole ensemble are controlled by the soloist(s) and the conductor. The solo part is developed by the composer and the soloist in collaboration. In this way the accompaniment takes on a different guise, governed by the personality and inclination of the soloist and regulated by the composer. The piece was performed as First Book of Motion with jazz-percussionist Marilyn Mazur as soloist at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music – Odense (Denmark) on January 8th 1999.
