Traps & Lies

for four saxophones (soprano)
composed 1999; duration 13 minutes
commissioned by Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet
world premiere Den Frie Udstillingsbygning – Copenhagen (Denmark) february 2000

Based on the central element of the woodwind quintet Dream; Then Talk. But unlike that piece, Traps & Lies concentrates on the very energetic and extremely strident opening statement. The character becomes even more agressive due to the sound and volume of the saxophones, as they intertwine in tight clusters. The piece is in many ways a recurring to earlier work with articulation of time and form through gesture, and the smothness of the sound of the four soprano saxophones lends itself particularly well to this purpose.
