Crouching Hands

for alto sax, harp and organ
composed 1998; duration 12 minutes
commissioned by Studio für Neue Musik, Munich
world premiere Munich (Germany) 1998

The unusual combination of alto saxophone, harp and organ had a strong influence on the basic idea and musical solution for the piece. The harp is throughout the piece marking the time and keeping a framework around the expanding gestures of the organ and the altosax. In fact, the organ very often mimics the saxophone, and the primary musical intensity is developed between these two instruments, while the harp is trying to keep things together.
