Seven Summerscapes

for 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons
composed 1993; duration 12 minutes
commissioned by The Danish Wind Octet
world premiere Tivoli Concert Hall 1993

The predominantly static atmosphere of these miniatures is an expressive application of impressionistic means associated with abstract landscape paintings of the late 19th-early 20th century. The seven movements are symmetrically arranged and performed without a break. The fourth movement, being the most substantial, constitutes a fulcrum around which the other movements balance in pairs. The first and last share characteristics of tone repetitions and rapid scale passages, while the second and sixth proceed in relaxed tempo with long sustained notes in clusters. The third and fifth movement explore a sonic space of larger range which dramatically leads both into and away from the central fourth movement.
