Elations

for flute, clarinet and bassoon
composed 1994-95; duration 13 minutes
commissioned by Trio Divertimento
world premiere Copenhagen (Denmark) 1995

Long, held notes in tight clusters – often at only at the interval of a quarter-tone – dominate the opening of the piece. Gradually, solistic comments are interjected, and finally they reach the prominence of a contrasting idea. The level of energy pushes little by little the players into an elation of rhythmical interplay. The culmination is felt as a ‘standstill of great intensity’, and towards the end the interval of the quarter-tone reemerges.
