Tempest

for 5 accordions and marimba
composed 1994; duration 9 minutes
commissioned by Jeanette and Lars Dyremose
world premiere Danish Broadcasting Corporation 1995
Danish Accordeon Ensemble; Jeanette Dyremose – conductor

The title suggest the development of the piece. The opening measures are calm and relaxed, yet the end is at a ferocious speed, reached through a succession of rhythm-modulations. This development is most obvious in the accompaniment, which start as a soft trembling and ends in a percussive and wild climax. Different playing techniques are used in the accordions, where phrases overlap in an increasingly reckless manner. At the end, everyone fall into accord, and the resulting energy pushes the piece into its final level.
