Three Pieces: Before – Projection – After

for double-bass, voice (one player) and interactive computer (max/msp)
composed 2005; duration 13 minutes
world premiere may 8 2005
Den Anden Opera; Irina-Kalina Goudeva, double-bass and voice
commissioned by Irina-Kalina Goudeva

The work makes ample use of the double-bass performer’s voice as well as a wide range of extended performance techniques. Each piece represents a particular aspect of a universal being, which is elaborated into striking musical personalities of abstract vocal sounds, instrumental sonorities and electronic timbres. The last piece is based on Catalina’s aria from the opera La Quintrala. The vocal sounds of the first piece are derived from mythological texts, but all meaning has been taken out, to render it without any verbal meaning according to the particular purpose in the work. The middle piece is very gentle and dreamy, hereby representing a transcendental middle-state.
