Stretch & Conceal

for piano solo
composed 2002; duration 6 minutes
world premiere Esbjerg Musikhus (Denmark) september 27 2002
commissioned and premiered by Marcel Worm

‘Stretch and Conceal’ uses a combination of notated and open sections as a context for improvisation. A formal balance between the two approaches has been aimed for, so that neither may dominate. The purpose was to compose a piece which could be thought of as either-or/neither-nor. The term ‘stretch’ applies both to the economical use of material in the written-out parts as well as its extensions into the instructions for improvisational sections. ‘Conceal’ applies to the gradual uncovering – which in fact just as well can be seen as a gradual concealment – of the composition during its course. The only reference the piece conceals in specific terms is to a bass line by Charlie Mingus, which is found at the beginning of the first improvisational section.”
