Three Etudes for Piano

for piano solo
composed 2004; duration 9 minutes
world premiere september 20 2004
Alicante Music Festival
commissioned and premiered by Ananda Sukarlan

The etudes are based on recent chamber works with piano, but a significant additional element is some unique characteristics derived from scales widely used in Indonesian music. Mr. Sukarlan pointed me to these possibilities, and this – combination with rethinking of other, earlier ideas I have had for the piano, and a unifying disposition over the three movements – ties the three short pieces in to a coherent whole. Each etude explores a particular register of the piano, and a precise range of musical elements, each being so readily identifiable that they practically become musical ‘devices’. Material for one of the etudes was used for the epilogue of the chamber piece Defun.
