for 2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos
composed 1987, revised 1997; duration 13 minutes
dedicated to Copenhagen Classic
world premiere Danish Broadcasting Corporation 1997

The main attraction for composing this piece was the possible dominance of darker colours through the presence of the two violas. The piece generally avoids the extreme high and low registers, and instead exploit rhythmic energy in the lower-middle register. The beginning and the end of the piece is characterized by fast rhythms and additive meters, and tension is built by the simultaneous accelerating and slowing down of the basically melodic material. The middle section contains various elements of lesser energy. This section creates a desire for the returning of the vibrating rhythms, and is therefore not composed as a self-contained, resolved, and concluded section.
