for large orchestra (3,3,3,3/4,3,3,1/timp,1perc,harp/strings)
composed 1989; duration 15 minutes
commissioned by Sergio Cárdenas and Orquésta del Bajío
world premiere Guanajuáto (Mexico) 1990
Orquésta del Bajío; Sergio Cárdenas – conductor

The composition falls in three parts, without pause. The first part is of a varied, rhapsodic nature with sudden bursts of rhythm and texture. A slow middle section is characterized by the string quartet formed by the principals of the 1st and 2nd violins, viola, and cello, playing over a sustained, modulating pitch of woodwind, vibraphone and harp.

The final section opens with a chorale played by the brass, while the rest of the orchestra hammer out persisting rhythms as a contrast to the melodic flow. Gradually, the whole orchestra combine in highly elaborate melodies, which bring the piece to a conclusion through a long crescendo.
