Peaks and Streams

for violin and percussion
composed 2002; duration 12 minutes
commissioned by Südwestrundfunk
world premiere june 28 2002
Attacca Festival, Stuttgart (Germany)
Isabelle Faust – violin; Edgar Guggeis – percussion

The composition is based on a concept of parallel ‘focal points’. The anticipation of these focal points articulate the character of the work, while the focal points themselves define the formal development. A focal point – and thereby also its preparation and anticipation – is understood in its broadest term, meaning that it may lie in any level of the compositional abstract and be of any nature in the defined, compositional procedure. The result is that the composition can coherently combine basically any technical approach deemed ‘appropriate’ by the composer. As a consequence, the various approaches become subject to the overall perspective of the composer, combined as they are into one paradoxically coherent composition. The result is a negation of these compositional approaches which in return puts emphasis on the basis of the work – the presence of parallel focal points and their anticipation – and thus gives us the title of the composition.

Peaks and Streams was commissioned by Südwestrundfunk for the attacca festival, and is dedicated to Isabelle Faust and Edgar Guggeis.
