I have just finished a recording session with the fine reed player Tobias Klein. We had a couple of hours and tried out realtime interaction in three different sketches. My patch was an adaption of what I have been using in recent score works in my residency at NYU Steinhardt, such as Quiet Voice and Sparks and Feathers, as well as the highly open-form work Walk. There were many good moments, and you can have a preview here:
This is just a rough edit, but it could become a very nice release with a little bit of work. Furthermore, it is a continuation of my idea of using the same patch across a stylistically very wide area, including highly rhythm-oriented pieces on one extreme, and participatory installations on the other. The interaction techniques included various estimates of melody, rhythm and tonality, and mid-level features extracted from the bass-clarinet’s spectrum.
Preparing for the recording, I was cleaning up parts of what I have been doing since October 2010, and that was a very beneficial exercise. Several bugs, incongruents, and just plain clumsy code was fixed, and for what I have seen, I am sure there are many more improvements still to be made.
