A different group of sessions at NYU Steinhardt past April 2012 at the James L. Dolan studio was with flutist Robert Dick and the NYU Improvisers’ Ensemble. While all other sessions had a strong element of timing and even periodicity, these sessions were of an exploratory sound-art character, similar to open form improvisations and certain kinds of contemporary classical music. The session with Robert Dick had no preparation, but we did have three rehearsals with the NYUIE where I introduced some common modus operandi and ways to respond to particular musical material. The result was to rather precise tracks, after a bit of editing. The second track’s gloomier character is a welcome new element, since all these April sessions shared three groups of musical material. It has not turned out as a limitation, but it has meant that the improvisatory excursion have been a bit constrained.
The flute sessions with Robert Dick gave three tracks, with bass-flute, flute in C and piccolo. Combined with Robert’s voice, the tracks give ample showcase to slides, multiphonics and other playing techniques that gives some of the most interesting tracks of the entire session.
